Artist Statement:
My approach to art changes depending on the realm I'm working within. Paint, for me, is meant for personal expression, and introspection, working to process what's going on in my life. Focusing on the loudest thoughts, and putting them on the canvas. Exploring the relation of colors, patterns, and math until I feel there's nothing else to add to the conversation.
In contrast Woodwork, and sculpture, is focused on imagining something beautiful, and bringing it into existence. Recognizing the natural beauty in the wood, and working with it in ways that accentuate its existing characteristics, while transforming its shape and function. The joy in sculpture, for me, is much more in the process and practice. Learning how to best create the final piece as close to the imagination as possible.
In this show Conversations, I'm sharing introspective work, as well as inviting the viewer to participate with the sculpture. Aiming to create an inclusive environment that encourages engagement. The conversations I'm having with paint can never fully be translated, but hopefully the space will give the audience the ability for their own reflection with the work. For me the carvings are just more enjoyable when you can get a full tactile experience, and I want the audience to get that full experience. As well, I'm thinking about engagement for people who may not normally feel encouraged to get the most out of a gallery visit. Whether it be people with different levels of sight, neuro divergent engagement patterns, or even people who just don't feel comfortable in art galleries being told "yeah go play with that sculpture"
I hope people are able to view this show with joy, and leave feeling encouraged about how fun the practice can be.
